Once, in the school photo lab, Lyudmila Zinchenko showed us how to print pictures from a telephone on a photographic enlarger. In the experiment, instead of a frame with photographic film, we put a phone on the screen of which a live broadcast from Times Square in New York was playing.

I remember the delight of watching miniature life through the eyepiece on the other side of the world, who had no idea that they were being watched by students from a photography school in Russia. I remember the excitement and joy of peeking and creating new things in the lab. Based on this memory, I created an object similar to a portable photo lab or ‘Afghan camera’.

This work was part of an exhibition called ‘Moscow 24’, so in the installation I used video recordings from magical places in Moscow. The project also includes photographs of these locations in black and white optical photographic printing technique
